He Burns Coffee Grounds in His Backyard. The Reason? Genius!

Have you had your coffee today? Coffee is the second most consumed drink in the world, behind water. So, if you like to drink good coffee every morning, you should know that it has a little known use: scaring away insects. Next time you think about buying a spray insect repellent, remember this tip! Coffee is a great insect repellent. And best of all, it's all natural and super cheap. Sounds weird, doesn’t it? Most insects smell using their antennae, and their sense of smell is heightened. Due to its strong aroma, coffee is able to keep the insects far away. The US Environmental Protection Agency even lists coffee grounds as something that can keep mosquitoes away. In order for it to be really effective, the tip is to burn the coffee grounds.

Here's how:
Cover a dish with foil and place the coffee grounds on top. It’s very important that the process is performed in a cool, dry place. Let the coffee grounds dry out somewhere flat, like a table. Make sure to keep them out of the reach of children and animals. Then slowly burn the residue of the ground coffee, as if it were an incense. You can burn it on the plate itself or transfer it into a tin. This way, the smoke will spread throughout the area, repelling insects. Another suggestion is to spread the coffee grounds around, forming a line, and burn it from one end to another. But that's not all. Coffee is also effective at eliminating mosquito larvae that stay on dishes and pots of plants. To combat them, try mixing coffee grounds with the soil in the potted plants. Coffee grounds are also great for chasing away ants. Just make a path with the dry grounds where they pass to scare them away.
